Hansi Flick’s Dominance Over Real Madrid That Even Guardiola Couldn’t Achieve
For the first time in its history, Barcelona has reached three consecutive official finals by defeating Real Madrid. The latest, a 3-2 win in the Spanish Super Cup, cements Hansi Flick’s era and a streak that even Guardiola’s best Barça never managed to achieve.
For the first time in over 120 years of history, FC Barcelona has managed to defeat Real Madrid in three consecutive official finals—a feat unprecedented even during the club’s most successful eras. The most recent victory, a thrilling 3-2 in Saudi Arabia in the Spanish Super Cup final, cements a historic streak that even Pep Guardiola’s legendary team never achieved. In this context, Hansi Flick’s stature continues to grow in Catalonia, along with his impressive record in decisive matches.
Until recently, the coaching staff led by Guardiola was the only one capable of defeating Real Madrid in consecutive finals. They achieved it in the 2011 Super Cup, with a 3-2 win over José Mourinho’s team, and repeated the same result a year later under Tito Vilanova. However, that streak was broken by the 2011 Copa del Rey final defeat, decided by a Cristiano Ronaldo goal at Mestalla, ending that historic possibility.
After the recent victory, Flick did not hide his satisfaction: ‘It was a very important final. Against Madrid, it’s always special. I’m very proud of the team; we played the way we wanted, keeping possession and controlling the game. It wasn’t easy, but we fought together, and that’s impressive.’ Words that summarize what is already his fourth title with Barcelona, all won in domestic competitions and all against the eternal rival.
The German coach has established himself as the great architect of a Barça that has found both identity and efficiency. Flick has become a true finals specialist: the three he has contested with the Blaugrana ended in victory, in addition to five more during his time at Bayern Munich. In total, eight consecutive finals won—a flawless record that no one has managed to break since he began his career as a head coach.
This new era also reinforces Barcelona’s supremacy over Real Madrid in recent finals. It all began a year ago with a commanding 5-2 win in the Spanish Super Cup, again in Saudi Arabia. Afterwards, the Culés triumphed 3-2 in the Copa del Rey final held in Seville. The current victory, with the same scoreline, closes a historic cycle and cements a record that even Guardiola’s best Barça could not achieve during his four years in charge of the club
