Hansi Flick Makes Clear How He Feels About Xabi Alonso Leaving Real Madrid
FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick voiced his support for former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso following his recent dismissal, describing him as an elite coach who will “soon lead a major project” in world football.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Barcelona’s Copa del Rey round-of-16 clash against Racing de Santander, Flick addressed Alonso’s departure from the Real Madrid bench, which came after the Supercopa de España final—won 3–2 by Barcelona.
Hansi Flick on His Relationship With Xabi Alonso
“This is football. It’s not my decision,” Flick said. “I’ve had a very good relationship with Xabi Alonso since his time at Bayer Leverkusen, when I was coaching the German national team. I wish him all the best. I’m convinced that he and his coaching staff will soon be involved in a great project. He’s a fantastic coach with a bright future.”
Asked whether Real Madrid’s decision surprised him, Flick emphasized the realities of elite football management: “Football depends on results. The risk of being dismissed is part of the job. A club must believe in you, but ultimately the decision-makers choose the direction—and Real Madrid decided to go this way.”
Flick Avoids Commenting on Arbeloa Appointment
Flick declined to assess Álvaro Arbeloa, who has taken over as Real Madrid’s new head coach. “When we face him, we’ll analyze him,” Flick said briefly.
Instead, the German coach highlighted the strong internal culture at Barcelona, praising the unity between players, coaching staff, and club leadership.
“Since I arrived at Barcelona, I’ve felt that everyone works together like a family. We’ve built something special here. The situation is very good right now, although football can change quickly. I truly value this culture and sense of togetherness,” Flick concluded.
