Flick Has Already Joined Barcelona’s Coaching Giants

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona have started the season sitting at the top of LaLiga, a position that has become remarkably familiar since the German took charge of the Catalan giants.

Flick has managed Barça across 81 LaLiga matchdays and finished 61 of them at the top of the standings, according to figures shared by Pedro Martín. In other words, Barcelona have occupied first place after roughly three out of every four league rounds under Flick.

That remarkable record has already moved Flick into the top five Barcelona coaches for most LaLiga matchdays spent as leaders. What makes his rise even more impressive is how quickly he has done it: he has completed only two full seasons and is now at the beginning of his third.

Cruyff and Luis Enrique Are Already Behind Him

With 61 matchdays as league leader, Flick has moved past Terry Venables, who reached 60, while also surpassing some of the most celebrated coaches in Barcelona history.

Johan Cruyff, the architect of the club’s modern transformation, accumulated 59 matchdays in first place across eight seasons. Louis van Gaal recorded 58 in four campaigns, while Luis Enrique reached 55 during his three years in charge.

The biggest difference is the speed at which Flick has climbed the ranking. He needed only two complete seasons and the beginning of a third to surpass records that other legendary coaches built over considerably longer spells, highlighting Barcelona’s remarkable consistency under the German.

Guardiola Still Owns the Mark Everyone Is Chasing

The next name standing in Flick’s way is Rinus Michels, who recorded 63 matchdays as LaLiga leader. Flick needs only two more to draw level and three to move into fourth place outright.

From there, the challenge becomes significantly tougher. Ernesto Valverde sits third with 80 matchdays, while Frank Rijkaard reached 85. At the top remains Pep Guardiola, whose Barcelona finished 87 league rounds in first place during his four seasons in charge.

There is still a considerable gap, but Flick’s pace means Guardiola’s mark is beginning to enter the conversation. Only 26 matchdays as leader currently separate Flick from the coach who sits at the top of this historic Barcelona ranking.

Flick Has Time to Chase Down First Place

The season is still in its early stages, and Barcelona have already added four more matchdays as league leaders to Flick’s total. If they maintain that consistency, the German could quickly overtake Michels before turning his attention toward Valverde, Rijkaard and ultimately Guardiola.

Remaining at the top throughout an entire campaign will, of course, be considerably more difficult than doing so during the opening weeks. The battle for LaLiga will ultimately determine how close Flick can get to the record.

But the German has already achieved something remarkable. With 61 matchdays as leader from just 81 in charge, Flick has joined some of the greatest coaches in Barcelona history—and Guardiola’s benchmark is now within reach.
