Frenkie de Jong Opens Up About the Toughest Moment of His Career
Frenkie de Jong breaks his silence and reveals the darkest chapter of his career: an injury, months of uncertainty, and the pain of missing the Euros.
The recognition that came with a hidden story
Frenkie de Jong recently found himself in the spotlight for a historic achievement with FC Barcelona. The midfielder reached 293 appearances, becoming the Dutch player with the most matches in the club’s history, surpassing iconic names like Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, and Ronald Koeman.
The Camp Nou crowd responded with a standing ovation, celebrating his importance within the team. But behind that milestone lies a far more emotional and complex story—one that had little to do with football itself.
According to an interview with Ziggo Sport, De Jong used this moment to reflect on a period that tested him beyond the pitch.
An Injury That Changed Everything
The turning point came in 2024, when a right ankle injury sidelined him for months. It wasn’t just a minor setback: 199 days without playing and 31 missed matches defined a period the midfielder himself described as the most difficult of his career.
“It was a very difficult period. I think the toughest of my career,” the Dutchman admitted.
But beyond the physical pain, what truly affected De Jong was the uncertainty. No one could clearly say how long he would be out. It could be weeks… or even a year. That lack of answers became his biggest challenge.
“Not knowing when you’ll return or if the pain will fully go away is the most frustrating part,” he explained.
The situation didn’t just keep him off the pitch—it also forced him to miss one of the most important stages for any footballer: Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, an absence that, according to his own words, hit him deeply.
The Mental Battle: The Real Challenge
Although football often focuses on the physical side, De Jong’s experience made it clear that the mental aspect can be even more overwhelming.
The Dutch midfielder admitted that being unable to do what he loves most—playing football—was a heavy emotional blow. His routine disappeared, his confidence wavered, and each day became a test of patience.
According to his own words, the hardest part wasn’t the rehabilitation itself, but living with constant doubt. “If you know it’s three months, you can deal with it. But not knowing… that’s the worst,” he explained.
Even when he returned to the pitch in October 2024, the recovery wasn’t immediate. For a while, the ankle was still present in his mind and in the way he felt on the field.
The Comeback and a New Version of De Jong
Today, the picture looks completely different. Frenkie de Jong has left that dark chapter behind and says he feels fully recovered.
“I don’t feel it during matches anymore. Now it’s completely fine,” he stated with relief.
Although he admits that he still pays attention to his ankle from time to time, the reality is that he has regained his essence on the pitch. His style of play hasn’t changed permanently—and that may be his greatest victory.
