Flick Insists Barcelona Remains a Strong Team Despite Consecutive Defeats
After a difficult week with losses to PSG and Sevilla, German coach Hansi Flick urges calm and believes Barcelona will bounce back after the international break to regain their best form in LaLiga and the Champions League.
German coach Hansi Flick sent a message of calm following a challenging week for Barcelona, which ended with a 4-1 loss against Sevilla, just days after falling 2-1 to PSG in the Champions League. These two consecutive setbacks not only hurt the team’s momentum but also cost them the top spot in LaLiga. Even so, Flick emphasized the team’s response and expressed confidence that they will return stronger after the international break.
Acknowledging First-Half Mistakes
In his post-match press conference, Flick admitted that Barcelona’s first-half performance was below expectations but highlighted their second-half reaction:
“We need to take this in a positive way. I’ll focus on our reaction in the second half. I don’t think it’s a problem with the system or strategy. We made big mistakes, but we always try to play our football,” he explained.
He also noted that recent defeats should serve as valuable lessons: “I said it after the game against PSG — we need to learn from that match, and now from this one too. If we analyze everything properly, we’ll come back stronger after the international break.”
Confidence in a Quick Recovery
Despite the poor results, Flick stressed that this situation doesn’t compare to more painful defeats: “The toughest loss was the semifinal against Inter Milan in last season’s Champions League. We accept this one with a positive mindset. There are things we must fix, especially in the first halves, where we make mistakes and struggle to move the ball in certain areas.”
He also highlighted the importance of the international break: “The break is good for us. The players will have a change of environment with their national teams, and that will help. When they return, we’ll work hard to get back to our level. We need some of them to reach their top form.”
Finally, Flick praised the team’s fighting spirit despite the defeat: “I’ll take the reaction and the effort from the team. We’re not happy with the loss, but it’s just one game. We have to keep going.”
