Fear? The Surprising Reason Why Szczęsny Doesn’t Want To Play El Clásico Against Real Madrid
In a confession that has shocked Barcelona fans, Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny revealed that he would actually prefer not to play in the upcoming Clásico against Real Madrid, scheduled for the end of October. His reason, however, has nothing to do with the pressure of the match — it’s about wanting to see his young teammate Joan García fully recovered and back between the posts, a player he believes is destined to become the best goalkeeper in the world.
The veteran shot-stopper, who previously played for Arsenal and Juventus, has taken on more of a mentoring than a starring role since joining the Catalan club. In an interview with Polish outlet Sport, he made it clear that his main goal isn’t to defend Barça’s goal at the Santiago Bernabéu, but to help García return to action as soon as possible.
A relationship built on respect and admiration
“I saw Joan García when he played for Espanyol, and I was immediately impressed,” confessed Szczęsny. “After training together for three days, I knew I could contribute something to his development. He has everything it takes to become the best goalkeeper in the world. If I can help him, even just a little, it would be a great source of pride for me.”
The Polish keeper emphasized that his relationship with the young shot-stopper is entirely open and collaborative. “There’s no competition for the spot. He knows exactly what my role is here, and I know what his is. I don’t want there to be any doubt: Joan García is, and should be, Barcelona’s number one,” the veteran declared.
García’s injury and Flick’s challenge
García’s dream season was interrupted on September 26, when he suffered a meniscus tear during training. The goalkeeper underwent successful surgery but will be sidelined for at least four weeks, putting his participation in the highly anticipated Clásico against Real Madrid on October 26 in serious doubt.
Since his €25 million transfer from Espanyol, the Catalan goalkeeper had quickly earned the trust of Hansi Flick and Barça fans alike. His performances were instrumental in the team’s strong start to the season before the injury forced him out.
In the meantime, Szczęsny has stepped up as the starting keeper, though he insists his main goal is to support García’s development. “I hope he recovers soon. I don’t expect to play in the Clásico — I want to see him out there, proving what he’s worth,” he said.
A Barcelona under pressure
Barcelona is coming off its first defeat of the season, a painful 4–1 loss to Sevilla, which allowed Real Madrid to overtake them at the top of the LaLiga table. Before El Clásico, Hansi Flick’s side will face Girona on October 18 in a crucial match to regain confidence.
With uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping position and a packed schedule ahead, the October 26 Clásico promises to be more than just another game — it will be a test of character for Barça, and a lesson in humility and leadership for Szczęsny.
