Did Lamine Yamal Make the Wrong Choice by Picking Spain Over Morocco? Some Say Yes
The decision was made long ago, but the debate refuses to fade. From Morocco, strong voices continue to question the path chosen by one of football’s brightest young stars.
A Decision That Left Open Wounds
Lamine Yamal was forced to choose between representing Spain or Morocco, and he ultimately decided to wear the shirt of the Spanish national team. A legitimate choice, but one that did not sit well in Moroccan football circles, where many saw him as a future star capable of defining an era.
As time has passed, that wound has not fully healed. In Morocco, there is still a sense of having lost one of the most exciting talents of his generation, especially as Lamine’s rapid rise at FC Barcelona continues to confirm his status on the European stage.
A Legendary Voice Fuels the Debate
The controversy was reignited by Mustapha Hadji, a legend of Moroccan football and former international with 63 caps and 13 goals. Speaking to Al Arabiya Sports, Hadji expressed his disappointment and did not hide his frustration over Lamine Yamal’s decision.
“Even if he plays for Spain, the affection Spaniards will have for him will never be the same as what Moroccans would give him,” Hadji said. He went further by referencing opinions from Spanish media, suggesting that Lamine may never receive the same emotional backing as other homegrown stars — a sign, in his view, that the young winger “made a mistake” by not choosing Morocco.

Lamine Was Always Clear About His Choice
Despite the external criticism, Lamine Yamal has consistently shown clarity and conviction about his decision. He has openly acknowledged that playing for Morocco crossed his mind, particularly after their historic run to the World Cup semifinals.
Still, his priorities were clear. Lamine explained that his dream was to compete in a European Championship, to play in Europe’s top spotlight, and to chase a World Cup with real chances of winning it. Raised in Spain and developed at La Masia, he made it clear that he feels Spanish — without denying his roots or the affection he holds for Morocco.
Two Paths, One Debate That Won’t Fade
As Morocco prepares to begin its campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations, aiming to confirm its status as a global contender after its World Cup breakthrough, Lamine Yamal’s name continues to resurface as a missed opportunity for many.
In Spain, the young star is focused on writing his own story, seemingly untouched by a debate with no expiration date. Whether he chose the right path will continue to be discussed — but Lamine has already set his course, and he shows no intention of turning back.
