Atlético Madrid could be closing in on one of Diego Simeone’s biggest targets to strengthen his defense. Cristian “Cuti” Romero has reportedly chosen the Spanish club as his preferred destination, with negotiations involving Tottenham beginning to take shape.

The Argentine defender is believed to have practically agreed personal terms with Atlético, while the two clubs continue working toward an agreement over his transfer.

The deal could be completed for around €40 million, a significant investment but one that would give the Cholo a center-back he has wanted for some time.

Because Simeone is not simply looking for another defender.

He wants a leader for his back line.

Cuti Romero Fits What Simeone Wants

Few defenders appear to fit the Cholo’s philosophy quite as naturally as Cuti Romero.

The Argentine is aggressive when stepping forward, has no problem leaving his position to track an attacker, dominates individual duels and approaches every challenge with maximum intensity. For better or worse, that aggression has become part of his identity.

There is also a risk.

His defensive style occasionally takes him too close to the limit, and disciplinary issues have followed him at different points in his career. Simeone would have to find the balance between maintaining the aggression that makes Cuti such a different defender and preventing it from hurting the team.

But Atlético knows exactly what kind of player it would be signing.

At 28, Romero would arrive with enormous experience. He is one of Tottenham’s leaders and has won the FIFA World Cup and two editions of the Copa América with Argentina.

He would not be a project for the future.

He would arrive to play and take responsibility from day one.

A Signing That Could Transform Atlético’s Defense

His potential arrival could also have an immediate impact on the way the Rojiblancos defend.

Romero is comfortable defending far away from his own goal, something particularly valuable for an Atlético Madrid side looking to become more aggressive when recovering possession and push its defensive line higher up the field.

His recovery speed, ability to win duels and willingness to anticipate opponents would allow Simeone to move his defense forward without leaving the team as exposed to counterattacks.

His experience playing in both three- and four-man defensive systems would also give the Argentine coach different tactical options.

But perhaps what attracts the Cholo most is his personality.

Atlético has lost several defensive leaders in recent years, and Romero has the character to immediately become one of the strongest voices in the dressing room.

Atlético Makes Room for Cuti Romero

To complete a deal of this magnitude, the Spanish club also needs to make adjustments to its squad.

The movements surrounding Nahuel Molina and Matteo Ruggeri could help Atlético create space and generate the financial flexibility required to complete the center-back’s signing.

The club’s intention is to avoid missing out once again on a player Simeone has followed for some time and considers particularly well suited to his system.

This time, there could also be another crucial factor: the player’s own desire.

According to reports, Cuti Romero has prioritized Atlético Madrid and would be willing to continue his career in LaLiga.

That does not mean the deal is complete. A final agreement with Tottenham still needs to be reached, but the two sides appear much closer than they were during previous attempts.
