Could Barcelona Play an Official LaLiga Match in the United States? Here’s What Javier Tebas Said
Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, has once again left the door open for a possible official league match to be played in the United States this season. While he didn't confirm teams or dates, the idea of seeing FC Barcelona play in Miami remains a strong possibility, sparking interest on both sides of the Atlantic.
Is Villarreal vs Barcelona set to be played in Miami?
The rumor began with a post from Miguel Galán, president of CENAFE, who claimed that Villarreal vs Barcelona was the chosen fixture to be held in Miami this December. However, Tebas refused to confirm the claim.
“I don’t respond to Miguel Galán because he says so many things… We are working on it, and I’ve said many times that our intention is to take a match outside of Spain, and that Miami is a likely destination. His guess is like playing the lottery,” Tebas said during an event in London, where LaLiga signed a broadcast partnership with Saudi Arabia.
Can an official LaLiga match actually be played abroad?
Tebas reiterated that LaLiga's goal is to host an official league match in the U.S., something the league has been pushing for in recent years. Still, he clarified that nothing is confirmed yet:
“It’s always possible, but I don’t know if it will be Barcelona–Villarreal or a different match,” he said.
A similar plan was proposed in the 2018–2019 season, when Girona vs Barcelona was set to be played in Miami but was ultimately blocked due to opposition from the RFEF and FIFA.
What would it mean to see Barcelona play in the U.S.?
If confirmed, an official LaLiga match on U.S. soil would mark a historic moment in the league’s international expansion strategy. Given Barcelona’s global fanbase, the Catalan club is a natural candidate for such an event. However, for now, the idea remains speculative, with no official decision made.
