Cancelo completes Barcelona return to bolster Flick's defensive options
Just over two years after first joining Barcelona, Joao Cancelo has returned to the LaLiga giants on loan for the rest of the season.
Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that Joao Cancelo has returned to the club on loan from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for the rest of the season.
Cancelo's previous stint with the Blaugrana came in the 2023-24 campaign, where he made 42 appearances in all competitions under former Barcelona great Xavi.
The 31-year-old also provides Hansi Flick with some defensive cover for the right side of his defence, with Jules Kounde the only recognised right-back in Barcelona's ranks.
And Cancelo could make his second debut as soon as Thursday, with Barcelona in Copa del Rey action away to second-tier side Racing Santander.
"Almost all my idols played for Barcelona, and that’s why I like this club so much," Cancelo said at his unveiling on Tuesday.
"When I was in Benfica's youth academy, I played against Barca teams, and they all try to play the same style of football from the youngest players to the older ones.
"I really identify with it. Today I came back and felt right at home. I can't really explain why I feel this way about the club, maybe it's because my idols played here."
Cancelo's switch comes almost 16 months after joining Al-Hilal from Manchester City in a reported £21.2m transfer.
The Portugal international appeared 24 times for the Saudi Pro League side, providing five assists.
"It's difficult to say because I have a contract with Al-Hilal," Cancelo added when questioned whether his loan move could turn into a permanent transfer.
"I want to enjoy myself, perform well, and help the team improve if possible. I wasn't lucky enough to win titles when I was here, and I want to win."
