Benítez Eyes National Team Role and Backs Norway as Dark Horse
The veteran Spanish coach says he is willing to wait for the right project and believes Norway and Morocco could surprise at the World Cup.
Rafael Benítez is taking his time before returning to management. Following his departure from Panathinaikos FC, the veteran coach revealed that he intends to rest briefly before considering his next challenge, whether that comes with a European club or a national team.
Speaking about his future, Benítez admitted that international management is becoming an increasingly attractive possibility. After decades of coaching at club level, the Spaniard believes the right national team project could be a compelling next step in his career.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, Benítez highlighted the Norway national football team and the Morocco national football team as potential surprise packages. He suggested that factors such as climate adaptation and travel demands could significantly influence the tournament.
The former Liverpool FC and Real Madrid CF manager also praised the work of Luis de la Fuente with the Spain national football team, describing Spain as one of the teams capable of making a deep run in the competition.
Benítez also addressed the arrival of Xabi Alonso at Chelsea FC. While expressing confidence in Alonso's abilities, he warned that Chelsea remains one of the most demanding environments in European football.
Regarding the reported interest of Real Madrid in Julián Alvarez, Benítez admitted surprise but argued that elite strikers consistently command transfer fees in excess of €100 million in today's market.
With a decorated managerial career behind him and plenty of ambition still intact, Benítez remains open to the next opportunity—particularly if a national team comes calling with a long-term vision and the chance to compete at the highest level.
