Barcelona to Appeal Hansi Flick’s Suspension in Hopes He Can Be on the Bench at the Bernabéu
Barcelona refuses to give up and is fighting to overturn their coach’s suspension ahead of the most anticipated Clásico of the season.
Barcelona Refuses to Give Up on Flick
FC Barcelona has no plans to stand idly by following the one-match suspension imposed on Hansi Flick by the Sports Disciplinary Committee. The Catalan club will file an official appeal this Wednesday before the Appeals Committee, seeking to allow the German coach to sit on the bench at the Santiago Bernabéu this Sunday in the Clásico against Real Madrid, a decisive duel for the LaLiga lead.
Flick was handed a one-match suspension after being sent off late in the match against Girona, where he received two yellow cards in quick succession. The first came “for applauding a referee’s decision in protest,” and the second “for making a gesture of disapproval” moments later. Although the club had already submitted its initial defense, the committee rejected the claims and confirmed the punishment.
A Punishment at the Worst Possible Time
The German coach’s absence would be a serious setback for Barcelona, who arrive at the Clásico in high spirits and locked in a tight race for first place. Since his arrival, Flick has instilled an attacking and disciplined identity, becoming a key figure in the dressing room. Losing him on the sidelines—especially at the Bernabéu—would be both a tactical and emotional blow.
The club believes that suspensions for double bookings should be assessed with more flexibility, particularly when there are no insults, aggression, or serious misconduct involved. For that reason, Barcelona’s legal department is preparing a detailed appeal in hopes of overturning the decision and allowing Flick to lead from the technical area.

Awaiting a Crucial Decision
The appeal will be reviewed by the Appeals Committee, chaired by Miguel Díaz y García-Conlledo, which could issue its ruling within the next few hours. If the suspension stands, Flick would have to watch the Clásico from the stands, leaving control to his assistants.
However, Barcelona remains optimistic about a positive outcome. With just three days until kickoff, the atmosphere at Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper is filled with anticipation and urgency. Time is ticking — and the question remains: will Hansi Flick be on the bench at the Bernabéu, or will this become another chapter of controversy before Spain’s biggest game?
