Champions Barcelona failed to carry the momentum from El Clásico into their next match and suffered a painful defeat against Alavés, ending their hopes of reaching 100 points in LaLiga.
The result also snapped one of the team’s most impressive winning streaks.
Ibrahim Diabate ended Barcelona’s historic dream
The winning goal from Ibrahim Diabate not only gave Alavés a crucial victory in their relegation battle, but also denied Hansi Flick’s side a place in LaLiga history.
Barcelona entered the match still mathematically capable of reaching 100 points, but after the defeat they can now finish with a maximum of 97.
The loss also ended Barça’s streak of 11 consecutive victories.
Barcelona fall short of the record
With only six points left available, Barcelona will finish three points shy of the historic 100-point mark achieved by Tito Vilanova’s Barcelona and José Mourinho’s Real Madrid.
Flick reacts to missing the milestone
After the match, Flick admitted his disappointment at missing the historic achievement.
“Today I saw a highly motivated team and many really positive things. Of course we wanted to win and reach 100 points, but now it’s no longer possible.”
