Kylian Mbappe scored twice, grabbing an 87th-minute winner, as Real Madrid claimed a 2-1 away victory over Barcelona in El Clasico.
Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid: Mbappe at the double as Mourinho gets Clasico win
Kylian Mbappe, who is aiming to win the Ballon d'Or on Monday, decided Sunday's Clasico as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona.
Barca were hoping to become the first team on record to start a season in one of Europe's top five leagues with 10 straight victories, having already built a six-point buffer to Madrid.
But Hansi Flick's side were up against it when Gerard Martin's attempted clearance ricocheted in off Mbappe in the 41st minute, although Raphinha's 13th goal of the LaLiga season drew them level shortly after the hour mark.
However, a wonderful, late counter from Madrid resulted in Mbappe slotting home to silence Camp Nou, with Jose Mourinho celebrating with a knee slide on the sidelines.
Madrid quickly got on the front foot as they looked to quiet the crowd, but no white shirts were lurking for a tap-in when Joan Garcia could only parry Arda Guler's drive.
Raphinha had three efforts at the other end, the second of which was the most threatening as his first-time strike whistled over the crossbar following some industrious work from Pedri, while Andrii Lunin – standing in for Thibaut Courtois, who was suffering from flu – denied Anthony Gordon.
Yan Diomande was one of Madrid's bright sparks in attack, and their opening goal came from him being slipped into the area by Marc Cucurella. The Ivorian's centre was far from his best, but Martin blasted it straight off Mbappe and in.
Barca should have had a quickfire equaliser when Lamine Yamal scuffed an uncharacteristically poor finish wide, but Flick's team were cut open on two more occasions before the interval.
Mbappe rifled against the inside of the post, only for the offside flag to go up against him, but Diomande was onside when he broke in behind and hit the side-netting moments later.
Madrid spurned another excellent counter-attacking chance early in the second half, with Jude Bellingham failing to get his pass off when Mbappe was supporting him against an isolated Martin.
And Barca made those reprieves count when Raphinha's shot proved too hot for Lunin to handle, after the Brazilian was cleverly found by Pedri on the right side of the area.
Lunin made a one-handed save to keep out Martin's header, though he was lucky to see one Yamal effort drift narrowly wide and another smack Dean Huijsen in the face.
However, there was a twist to come at the other end as, after more superb work from the outstanding Bellingham, substitute Eduardo Camavinga burst into the area and centred for Mbappe, who simply could not miss.
Mbappe outduels Yamal ahead of Ballon d'Or ceremony
Just 24 hours before the 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place in London, Sunday's Clasico featured two of the main contenders for the prize – Yamal and Mbappe.
And though the voting has long since been finalised, it was Mbappe who provided one final reminder of his credentials to be crowned the best player in the world.
There may have been a huge slice of fortune about Mbappe's opener, but his brace took him to five goals in two visits to Barca as a Madrid player. That is the most by any Blancos player since the start of 2013-14, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema (four each).
Yamal, meanwhile, missed a glaring chance to equalise in the first half and was unable to hit the net with any of his five shots, which were worth a team-high 0.51 expected goals (xG). He also failed to create a single chance and only completed 76.6% of his passes (47/76).
And, on a night where Barca could have opened up a huge nine-point gap to Madrid and made LaLiga history in the process, it was Mourinho who earned the bragging rights.
His unbeaten run in Clasico matches – which dates back to his previous spell in charge of Madrid – now stands at six games (W4 D2). He is just the third Blancos coach to enjoy such a run, after Miguel Munoz (1962 to 1965) and Vicente del Bosque (2001 to 2003) both had seven-match streaks.
Flick, meanwhile, also continues his wait for his 100th Barca win, having seen his team now lose back-to-back games in the space of five days, following the midweek Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
