Atlético Madrid Prepares an Offer for Cuti Romero
Atlético Madrid is once again pursuing one of the defenders Diego Simeone has admired most in recent transfer windows. After failing to complete the move last summer, the Spanish club is preparing a new approach for Cristian "Cuti" Romero, taking advantage of Tottenham Hotspur's reported willingness to listen to offers for the World Cup-winning center-back.
According to MARCA, Atlético's sporting directors are working on an initial bid worth around €30 million, although negotiations could become more complicated due to the Premier League club's valuation of the Argentine defender.
Atlético Makes Another Move
Atlético Madrid's interest in Cuti Romero is nothing new.
The Argentine international was one of Diego Simeone's top transfer priorities during the previous summer window, but the financial gap between Atlético and Tottenham prevented the deal from materializing.
This time, however, the situation appears more favorable. According to MARCA, Tottenham is now open to negotiating the defender's departure for a fee in the region of €40 million, a figure that has renewed optimism inside the Spanish club.
To make the transfer financially possible, Atlético Madrid is expected to complete a number of outgoing deals first. Players such as Matteo Ruggeri and Nahuel Molina are among those who could leave, generating transfer income and freeing up salary space to accommodate Romero's wages.
Although Inter Milan is also closely monitoring the defender and is reportedly preparing a more lucrative proposal, MARCA reports that Romero's preferred destination is Atlético Madrid, where he hopes to work under Diego Simeone.
A Perfect Fit for Simeone's System
From a tactical standpoint, Cuti Romero appears tailor-made for Diego Simeone's style of play.
The Argentine defender is known for his aggressive defending, dominance in one-on-one situations, and ability to anticipate opposing forwards. He is also comfortable playing out from the back and possesses the personality to initiate attacks from defense, an attribute Simeone has increasingly valued in recent years.
His intensity, leadership, and defensive mentality would fit naturally into a team built around tactical discipline, organized defending, and high-intensity pressing. In addition, his experience in the Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, and with the Argentina National Team would allow him to adapt quickly to a squad accustomed to competing for major trophies.
With José María Giménez entering the latter stages of his time at the club and Atlético Madrid looking to refresh its back line, Romero is viewed as the ideal candidate to become the new leader of the defense.

A Deal That Depends on the Transfer Market
Atlético Madrid understands that completing the transfer will not be easy.
Before launching a formal bid, the club must first complete several player sales to balance its finances and create room within the squad. Even so, the current situation appears far more favorable than it did a year ago.
According to MARCA, both Atlético Madrid and the player's representatives remain interested in making the transfer happen, while Tottenham Hotspur no longer considers the World Cup winner untouchable.
If negotiations continue to move forward in the coming weeks, Cuti Romero could become one of the marquee signings of Diego Simeone's project and finally provide the defensive leader the Argentine coach has been seeking for several transfer windows.
