Antonio Rüdiger’s Terrible Childhood: War, Poverty and the Pain Before Real Madrid
Antonio Rüdiger opened up about the story that shaped his life: refugee parents, a humble childhood in Berlin and a goal that never changed. Behind the Real Madrid defender lies a struggle few ever imagined.
Antonio Rüdiger recalled the war that forced his family to flee
The story of Antonio Rüdiger began long before football. His parents escaped one of the most devastating wars in West African history, a conflict that displaced millions and forced entire families to leave everything behind in order to stay alive.
As the player himself explained in a letter shared in collaboration with UNHCR, the war in Sierra Leone caused unimaginable devastation: separated families, destroyed villages and generations left carrying emotional scars that remain long after the fighting ended.
In the middle of that chaos, his parents managed to find refuge in Germany, searching for the chance to build a new life. While many relatives were scattered across different countries, trying to survive, Rüdiger’s family began a new chapter far away from violence.
The streets of Berlin shaped the Real Madrid defender’s mentality
Born in Germany, Rüdiger grew up in the Berlin neighborhood of Neukölln, an area he described as very different from what it has become today.
The footballer admitted his childhood was far from luxurious. “We didn’t have much at home,” he explained, while recalling a community where support and togetherness were essential for getting through difficult times.
Rather than allowing hardship to define him negatively, the Real Madrid defender believes those experiences built his personality. According to his account, those streets taught him how to defend himself, remain strong and understand the true value of hard work.
Antonio Rüdiger’s dream was never fame or Real Madrid
One of the most surprising revelations from his story is that, according to the defender himself, his childhood dream was never about becoming famous or playing for a giant club.
In fact, Antonio Rüdiger admitted he never imagined wearing the shirt of Real Madrid. His biggest goal was far more personal: helping his family financially and repaying them for everything they sacrificed to give him a better life.
Rüdiger wants to use his voice to help Sierra Leone’s youth
Far from focusing solely on football success, the Germany international explained that he now wants to use his platform to create positive change.
Through the Antonio Rüdiger Foundation, the player supports young people in Sierra Leone by helping provide access to education, sports and healthcare, aiming to create real opportunities for future generations still living with the consequences of war.
The defender also explained that representing Germany on the international stage feels like “closing the circle,” but also carrying a responsibility beyond football.
