Xavi Hernández Could Be Headed for an Unlikely Destination After His Barcelona Stint
Xavi Hernández’s name is once again making headlines in coaching circles, but this time not in Europe — rather, in the Middle East. The former FC Barcelona manager, who has been without a team since May 2024 following his departure from the Catalan club, is now one of the main candidates to take over at Al Ahli, one of the top teams in the Saudi Pro League, according to journalist David Ornstein from The Athletic.
Whether or not this move materializes depends on the current coach, Matthias Jaissle, who is under contract until 2026 but has reportedly turned down multiple renewal offers. This uncertainty has prompted Al Ahli’s board to open talks with other potential candidates, including Ange Postecoglou, the current Tottenham manager.
Xavi Hernández’s Unusual Destination After His Failure at Barcelona
The possibility of Xavi managing in Saudi Arabia marks a surprising turn in his career. After taking charge of Barcelona in November 2021, he coached the team for two and a half seasons. During his tenure, the club won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, but failed to deliver convincing football or strong performances in the Champions League — ultimately leading to his dismissal.
His time on the Barça bench was inconsistent: successful in domestic competitions, but disappointing on the international stage. The club missed out on crucial European runs for a second straight year under his leadership.
That drop in performance has cost Barcelona more than just prestige. Their absence from the new 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, set to feature 32 teams, is a significant financial blow for a club still struggling economically. The tournament will award each participant between $9 million and $38 million, with the champions earning up to $125 million, according to FIFA.
Barcelona failed to gather enough UEFA ranking points to qualify and will have to watch from the sidelines as other European giants like Real Madrid and Manchester City compete for these massive prizes. It’s a painful setback — both competitively and financially — for the Catalan side.
Meanwhile, Saudi football continues its rapid growth, attracting major global names. And Xavi Hernández, after falling short of expectations at Barcelona, may be about to write a new chapter in his career… far from Europe, and with the challenge of rebuilding in a league known for spectacle and eye-watering contracts.
