Who Will Inherit the No. 10 Shirt at Real Madrid After Modrić’s Exit?
With Luka Modrić’s departure from Real Madrid confirmed after the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the iconic No. 10 jersey will be up for grabs for the first time in over a decade. The Croatian maestro turned the number into a symbol of elegance, leadership, and class. Now, the question is: who will take on one of the most symbolic numbers in Madrid’s storied history?
Kylian Mbappé: The Obvious Choice?
Kylian Mbappé, who officially joined Real Madrid on June 3, 2024, currently wears the No. 9 shirt previously used by Karim Benzema. However, with the No. 10 being his number for the French national team, he naturally emerges as the frontrunner.
Mbappé has already left his mark at the Bernabéu, scoring 34 goals in 51 matches during his debut season. His superstar status, influence, and marketability make him a strong candidate to switch to the No. 10 — but as of now, there has been no official confirmation.

Jude Bellingham: A Natural Successor
Another top contender is Jude Bellingham. The Englishman, who currently wears No. 5 in tribute to Zinedine Zidane, has been a central figure for Real Madrid all season long. His intelligence, leadership, and attacking prowess make him a fitting heir to Modrić’s legacy — both on and off the pitch.
However, a change in number could be a personal decision. Bellingham may prefer to keep honoring Zidane, or the squad’s restructuring could determine if the No. 10 is available for him.
Arda Güler: The Ambitious Young Talent
Arda Güler, the promising Turkish midfielder, has also expressed his dream of wearing the No. 10 shirt one day. Despite limited minutes this season, the 19-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance that justify the club’s belief in his potential.
In an interview with The Players’ Tribune, Güler admitted: “It would be a dream to wear the number 10 one day.” However, due to his age and developmental stage, Madrid might prefer to wait before placing that kind of symbolic responsibility on his shoulders.
A Number That Carries History
The No. 10 jersey at Real Madrid is no ordinary number. Legends like Luis Figo, Wesley Sneijder, James Rodríguez, and of course Luka Modrić have worn it with distinction. Whoever inherits it next must be ready not only to perform — but to represent the values and weight of one of football’s most historic shirts.
Will it be Mbappé, stepping further into his leadership role? Will Bellingham take over as the team’s symbolic engine? Or will the club reserve it for the long-term rise of Güler?
Only time — and the Bernabéu dressing room — will decide.
