Who Is Joan García? Barcelona’s New Goalkeeper Set to Replace Ter Stegen
Joan García has emerged as one of the standout signings of the summer transfer window after being officially announced as FC Barcelona’s new goalkeeper, signing a long-term deal until June 30, 2031. At just 24 years old, the Catalan shot-stopper arrives following a breakout season with Espanyol, and is seen as Barça’s solution amid ongoing concerns about Marc-André ter Stegen’s fitness.
LaLiga’s Top Shot-Stopper
Born in Sallent (Barcelona), Joan García finished the 2024–25 LaLiga season as the goalkeeper with the most saves—a remarkable 145 stops. His performances were instrumental in Espanyol’s return to the top flight and their successful campaign upon promotion.
Despite his young age, García has shown impressive composure, confidence, and the ability to rise in pressure moments. Known for his positioning, quick reflexes, and comfort playing out from the back, he perfectly fits the profile Barcelona seeks in their modern, possession-based system.
From Tough Debut to Espanyol Star
A product of Espanyol’s youth academy, Joan García made his first-team debut in January 2022 against Elche—a match that didn’t go his way. Still, the club maintained faith in his potential. Under manager Manolo González, he earned the starting role and never looked back.
During the 2023–24 season in Segunda División, he played a key role in Espanyol’s promotion campaign. Once back in LaLiga, García stood out as one of the revelations of Spanish football with a string of stellar performances.
From Barcelona’s Radar to a Major Signing
Although Espanyol had extended his contract until 2028 and set a €25 million release clause, Barcelona’s interest intensified—especially after Ter Stegen’s recurring injury issues. While Premier League clubs also scouted him closely, Barça’s project and long-term vision convinced both García and his representatives.
At Camp Nou, García is not seen as a mere backup. He’s expected to become the long-term heir to Ter Stegen, possibly even starting sooner than expected depending on the German’s recovery.

A Future in Spain’s National Team?
Joan García has yet to debut with Luis de la Fuente’s senior Spanish squad, but his rapid rise, consistency, and age make him a strong candidate for future call-ups. If he continues on this trajectory at Barcelona, it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a regular name in Spain’s goalkeeper conversation.
