The swap between Chelsea and Real Madrid that could put Enzo Fernández in Xabi Alonso’s squad
Real Madrid and Chelsea are deep into talks for a swap deal that could shake up the European transfer market. According to Goal Brazil, the deal would send Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández, a key player for Chelsea, to the Spanish giants, while Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes would head to London. Both clubs want to strengthen key areas for next season.
Rodrygo and Enzo Fernández, The main hurdle? release clause differences
Rodrygo, with 50 games, 13 goals, and 10 assists in the 2024/2025 season, has seen his role shrink since Kylian Mbappé arrived at Real Madrid. Chelsea sees him as a chance to boost their attack. Meanwhile, Enzo Fernández, a World Cup winner and standout at Chelsea, has shined in the Premier League with 44 games, 7 goals, and 13 assists, making him the perfect midfield addition for Real Madrid under coach Xabi Alonso.
The biggest challenge in making the deal happen is the difference in release clauses. Rodrygo is valued around 100 million euros (about 110 million dollars), while Enzo Fernández’s clause is closer to 75 million euros (around 82 million dollars). But sources close to both clubs say the deal might include extra cash to balance the gap, since the priority is to reach a win-win agreement.
A symbolic move for Real Madrid
This swap would mark Real Madrid’s first direct signing of an Argentine player since Ángel Di María in 2010, showing the club’s focus on renewing the squad with young talent who combine quality and international experience. On the other hand, Rodrygo would look to relaunch his career in the Premier League, where he could get more minutes and play a bigger role.
With the summer transfer window coming up, the Rodrygo–Enzo Fernández swap looks like one of the most interesting and potentially game-changing moves of the market. If it goes through, it would change the futures of two key players and strengthen two of Europe’s biggest clubs. For now, talks continue as both sides work out the details of what could be one of the biggest deals of the summer.
