Reinier Jesus No Longer Counts for Real Madrid: Worse Signing than Hazard?
Reinier Jesus arrived at Real Madrid in January 2020 as one of the brightest young prospects in Brazilian football. At just 18 years old, the Spanish giants made a strong bet on him after his breakout with Flamengo, but five years later, his story in Madrid seems to have reached a dead end. Despite repeated attempts to prove himself, constant loan spells and underwhelming performances have made it clear that he is no longer in the club’s plans.
The Brazilian, who recently turned 23, is currently training in his home country, far from Valdebebas, as he waits for an offer to continue his career. After unremarkable loan spells with Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone, and a disappointing season at Granada, Reinier once again finds himself without a place — not even in Arbeloa's Castilla, which also doesn’t count on him.
The Granada illusion and Ancelotti’s clear message
Last season was supposed to be his chance at redemption. On loan at Granada in LaLiga Hypermotion, Reinier had some playing time — 25 matches, 14 starts — but left little impact: only one goal and four assists. Although he showed flashes of potential in preseason, his performance declined as the year went on.

Last summer, Carlo Ancelotti made his position clear. Due to the Euro absences, Reinier trained with the first team out of necessity, not merit. The Italian coach chose to leave him out of the U.S. preseason tour, sending a clear message. Since then, the Brazilian has had to accept his permanent exclusion.
A bigger disappointment than Eden Hazard?
The comparisons have already begun, and many now wonder if Reinier Jesus is the worst signing Real Madrid has made in recent years. Until now, that title seemed to belong to Eden Hazard, who arrived in 2019 as a global star from Chelsea, but constant injuries and poor form relegated him to the background. Despite costing over €100 million, the Belgian only scored seven goals in 76 appearances.
However, at least Hazard left behind a few moments and some trophies. Reinier, on the other hand, never managed to shine — even during his loan spells. With a contract until 2026, this summer will be crucial for his future. For now, he’s training in Brazil with his personal fitness coach, clinging to the hope of one last opportunity away from the Spanish capital.
