Real Madrid Plans to Sign Nico Williams before Barcelona
Nico Williams’ name is once again echoing through the halls of the Santiago Bernabéu. According to Marca, Real Madrid is considering a move for the Athletic Club winger, who has a release clause set at €58 million. After an outstanding Euro 2024 campaign, the 22-year-old has caught the attention of the club’s board.
Although he wasn’t a priority at the start of the transfer window, his profile has gained momentum in recent days. With pace, dribbling skills, and remarkable football maturity, Nico fits the club’s recruitment philosophy: young talent with long-term potential and, importantly, Spanish—a key part of Florentino Pérez’s strategy to reinforce the local core of the squad.
A busy summer at Valdebebas
Should Nico Williams arrive, he would join a flurry of activity at the club as Xabi Alonso prepares to lead the team into the Club World Cup. Madrid has already secured the signing of center-back Dean Huijsen, is in talks for Benfica full-back Álvaro Carreras, and has landed Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer.
The Nico operation is seen as both viable and strategic. Beyond his talent, he also brings media appeal—an essential asset in competing for spotlight with Barcelona’s rising stars like Lamine Yamal.
Barcelona came close to signing him last summer, but financial constraints blocked the deal. Now, with Joan Laporta focused on other targets such as Dani Olmo, Real Madrid seems to have a clearer path to win the race for Nico.
The winger is currently dealing with groin discomfort, which could keep him out of Athletic’s final match of the season—ironically, against Barcelona. If he plays, it might be his last game at San Mamés wearing the red-and-white stripes.
