Raphinha hits back at critics who said he wasn’t good enough for Barcelona
After a standout season with FC Barcelona, Raphinha finally spoke out and shut down the transfer rumors that had him leaving the club last summer over claims of underperforming. In an interview with Mundo Deportivo and Sport, the 28-year-old Brazilian winger defended his form and insisted his level was never in doubt—despite the critics.
“I’m not here as anyone’s gift”
“Ever since I joined, every transfer window there were rumors I was leaving, that I wasn’t good enough for this club. But I knew what I could do. I’m not here as anyone’s gift,” said Raphinha. He made it clear that his spot at Barça is something he earned through hard work—both at his previous clubs and with the Brazilian national team. And while he understands the pressure that comes with wearing the shirt, he never lost confidence in himself.
The transfer buzz wasn’t anything new. Big clubs from the Premier League and even teams from the Middle East were making serious offers. But the winger stood firm: “Top clubs in the Premier League don’t chase players who aren’t up to standard.” He also spoke about his connection to the club: “I grew up watching Barça, I remember Ronaldinho, Neymar... I always dreamed of making history here.”
Flick’s vote of confidence changed everything
A key reason for staying was a phone call from new manager Hansi Flick. “He was the only one who could’ve stopped me from leaving—and he did. He told me he was counting on me, and that made me stay,” Raphinha revealed. That trust showed on the pitch, and it was later cemented with a contract extension through 2028.
With 34 goals and 25 assists in 57 appearances, Raphinha has silenced his doubters. Now he feels appreciated, fired up, and at his best. “I told the president when I signed: I want to be here for many years. Hopefully I can finish my career at Barça,” said the Brazilian, who’s gone from questioned… to untouchable.
