Madrid Rules in Barcelona: Just One Loss in Their Last Seven Visits
Although under pressure to win in order to stay in the LaLiga EA Sports title race, Real Madrid can approach their visit to eternal rivals Barcelona with confidence: they’ve won four of their last seven away games against the Catalan giants, suffering just one loss and drawing twice. It’s a run that echoes the club’s golden eras on enemy ground.
This recent dominance mirrors the team’s legendary streak from 1960 to 1965, when they triumphed in six of eight visits to Barcelona, including four straight victories.
One Loss in Seven: Madrid in Control at Camp Nou
Since a 1-1 draw in the Copa del Rey semifinal on February 6, 2019, Real Madrid have played seven matches away to Barcelona, across both the iconic Camp Nou and the Estadio Olímpico Lluís Companys, coming out on top in four of them.
That 2018–19 season draw, under Santiago Solari, was followed by a goalless tie in the 2019–20 league campaign with Zinedine Zidane back at the helm—ending a 17-year streak of goals in El Clásico in Barcelona. Those results marked a turning point for Madrid, who had previously suffered a 5-1 thrashing in 2018, a result that led to Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal.
Things shifted dramatically with the return of Zidane and then under Carlo Ancelotti’s leadership. In October 2020, Madrid claimed a 1-3 victory with goals from Fede Valverde, Sergio Ramos (penalty), and Luka Modric, against a Barcelona side coached by Ronald Koeman. It was also the final Clásico at Camp Nou for Lionel Messi.
In October 2021, Ancelotti led another triumph, winning 1-2 thanks to goals from David Alaba and Lucas Vázquez, with Sergio Agüero scoring a late consolation for the hosts.
The only recent blemish came in March 2023, when Barcelona overturned an early own goal by Ronald Araújo with strikes from Sergi Roberto and a last-gasp winner from Franck Kessié, effectively sealing the title under Xavi Hernández.
But Madrid got their revenge in style weeks later, crushing Barcelona 0-4 at Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey semifinal, with a hat-trick from Karim Benzema and a goal from Vinícius Júnior.
Their most recent trip, in October 2023, ended with another win. Despite Ilkay Gündogan’s opener, Jude Bellingham delivered a stunning brace to complete a 1-2 comeback. Ancelotti’s squad continues to prove they fear no fortress—not even Barcelona’s.
