Laporta Reveals Who Advised Him to Sign Flick for Barcelona and Whether He Has Surpassed Guardiola
Joan Laporta gave FC Barcelona's season the highest marks and shared new details about the arrival of Hansi Flick, including who recommended the German manager to him: none other than Ralf Rangnick.
Flick Earns an "Excellent" and Gains the Locker Room
After parting ways with Xavi Hernández, Joan Laporta took a bold step by appointing Hansi Flick as head coach. The decision turned out to be key, with the German leading Barcelona to a treble—LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España—in his debut season.
In an interview, Laporta revealed the level of internal conviction behind the move. "I read an interview by Rangnick where he mentioned Johan Cruyff, and that resonated with me," said the club president. "He spoke about Tuchel, Nagelsmann, Klopp, and Flick, and we concluded that Hansi was the ideal fit."
Laporta praised Flick’s emotional intelligence and leadership. "He knows how to connect with the squad and makes everyone feel like they matter," he said. "He may understand Spanish, but chose to speak English to avoid misunderstandings."
Flick's Renewal Close to Finalized
According to Laporta, the coach has already agreed in principle to extend his contract through 2027. “We haven’t signed yet, but Flick is a man of his word,” Laporta said. “Back when he was still committed to Germany, he told me he couldn’t come. But deep down, we both knew he’d end up here.”
When asked whether Flick has exceeded expectations or even rivaled Pep Guardiola, Laporta was clear: “He achieved the main goal, which was winning the league. He calls it the most honest competition, because it demands consistency and resilience. We had tough moments, but we came through.”
Laporta emphasized that although the results were excellent, Flick is already analyzing improvements. “We’ve played in our own style, but we’ve also evolved. He’s studying new tactical variants to address areas where we’ve fallen short.”
With three titles already in the bag and the locker room united behind him, Hansi Flick has not only matched expectations—he may have opened a new golden chapter in Barcelona's history.
