Laporta Hints at Key Deal That Could Unlock Nico Williams Signing
Joan Laporta has hinted at a pivotal move in FC Barcelona’s summer transfer plans. Speaking ahead of his appearance on the La Llotja podcast, the Barça president told reporters: “If everything ends well, we could have good news this week and Ansu would go to Monaco,” referring to Ansu Fati, who is reportedly in advanced talks to leave the club for the Ligue 1 side.
Fati’s Loan to Monaco Could Clear the Path for Nico Williams
While Laporta declined to share further details, multiple reports in Spain indicate that AS Monaco is prepared to cover half of Fati’s salary, with a loan deal that includes a purchase option. Additionally, Ansu Fati would extend his contract with Barcelona until June 2028, allowing the Catalan club to retain some control over his future, potentially through a buy-back clause.
This operation would free up both squad space and crucial salary cap room, key requirements for Barcelona to pursue Nico Williams, one of Hansi Flick’s top targets this window. The Athletic Club winger has a €58 million release clause, and Barça must complete moves like Fati’s to afford such a fee.
Fresh Start in Ligue 1 for Ansu Fati
After limited minutes last season, the 22-year-old forward sees Monaco as a chance to regain form and consistency. Adi Hütter, head coach of the Ligue 1 side, has already approved the signing and expects to have Fati available as early as this Saturday, pending the outcome of this week’s medical tests.
Fati’s departure could set off a chain of events leading to the long-anticipated arrival of Nico Williams at Camp Nou. As Laporta said—“If everything ends well,” the first domino is about to fall.
