Lamine Yamal Sets Ambitious Goal That Puts All of Europe on Alert—Including Real Madrid
The young FC Barcelona star wants more minutes and a bigger role, including free-kick and penalty duties, under new coach Hansi Flick.
Mature Beyond His Years
Although Lamine Yamal is just 17—he turns 18 in July—the maturity he displays both on and off the pitch is striking. Considered by many as FC Barcelona’s most technically gifted player, he’s already shown his ability to create chances and destabilize opposing defenses.
His performances in the final stretch of the season have been especially impressive. Whether it was against Atlético de Madrid, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, or Espanyol, Yamal consistently made an impact. Even in matches that had no effect on LaLiga standings, such as against Villarreal and Athletic Club, he proved a step ahead of his rivals.
Eyes on Set Pieces and More Responsibility
For the next season, Lamine Yamal has set his sights even higher. He wants to increase his playing time, be subbed out less, and finish more matches. His reasoning is simple: tired defenses are easier to break down late in games, allowing him to score and assist more frequently—key ingredients for winning matches, trophies, and individual accolades.
In addition, the homegrown talent wants a spot in the team’s set-piece hierarchy. Currently, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Ferran Torres lead the free-kick and penalty rotations, but Yamal believes his shooting technique and power make him a strong candidate to contribute in those areas as well. He hopes Hansi Flick, the new Barcelona head coach, gives him that opportunity.
After a breakout season and a contract renewal that secures his future at the club until 2031, Yamal is determined to evolve into a decisive figure not just for Barça, but in European football at large. His ambition puts him on a collision course with elite clubs across the continent—including Real Madrid.
