Javier Aguirre Bids Farewell to Mallorca
Mallorca’s coach, Javier Aguirre, struggled to hold back his emotions during his official farewell at the Son Moix stadium. "I don't want to break down, I have to hold it together like a tough guy," said the Mexican coach, trying to contain his tears.
The club did not offer "El Vasco" a contract renewal after two and a half seasons where he met all the objectives set for him. Aguirre, flanked by CEO’s of Football and Business, Pablo Ortells and Alfonso Díaz, respectively, and accompanied by his coaching staff, his wife, and players Antonio Raillo and Pablo Maffeo, made no mention of the circumstances that led to his departure from the Balearic bench.
"I've left many clubs, but quietly. You leave, and that's it. This farewell surprises me, and I appreciate the words from Pablo and Alfonso. The work remains, I feel the warmth of the fans and the respect from all of you," Aguirre said, addressing the media.
"We will be friends forever," emphasized the Mexican coach, who postponed further comments about his departure for the next press conference amidst a standing ovation.
Both Ortells and Díaz praised Javier Aguirre. "You leave a mark on Mallorcanism and will always be in our hearts," said the Football Director, who informed Aguirre that his contract, expiring on June 30, would not be renewed.
"Thank you for coming during tough times (March 2022) when we were relegated to the Second Division. You and your entire team have been great professionals. We’ve stabilized in the First Division after many years in different categories. We wish you the best of luck," concluded Ortells.
