Is Szczęsny’s Backup on His Way Out? Barcelona Could Be About to Lose One of its Key Depth Players
The future of Iñaki Peña at FC Barcelona is increasingly uncertain. The goalkeeper from Alicante, who is under contract until June 2026, is reportedly seriously considering a move away in search of more playing time.
Last season, Peña had the chance to start several matches due to Marc-André ter Stegen's injury. However, following the German’s recovery and the arrival of Wojciech Szczęsny, he returned to a secondary role—eventually becoming the third-choice keeper.
This Barcelona goalkeeper could be leaving the club
Sources close to the player suggest his top priority is to find a new team where he can feature regularly. To that end, just over a month ago, the goalkeeper switched agents and joined AC Talent, the agency that also represents figures like Xavi Hernández, Pablo Torre, and Héctor Fort.
The club is aware of the situation, but no final decisions have been made regarding goalkeeper planning for the upcoming season. The potential continuation of Szczęsny could further limit Iñaki Peña’s chances of staying in the first team. Unless there is an unexpected shift from the sporting management, all signs point to the keeper seeking a new challenge this summer.
While no official offers have been made yet, the player remains open to options from both LaLiga and abroad. It's worth noting that back in January 2022, he had a loan stint with Galatasaray, where he impressed—even facing Barça in the Europa League.
One club reportedly considering signing Peña is Celta de Vigo, which is looking to strengthen its goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign. However, no formal negotiations or offers have been initiated so far.
The match against Villarreal at the Estadi Olímpic could mark the end of Peña’s time at the club if coach Hansi Flick decides to start him. It would be a meaningful farewell for a player who, despite his professionalism and dedication, never quite established himself as a key figure in Barça’s first team.
