Hansi Flick’s Warning to Lamine Yamal: “He Has to Work…”
The Barça coach tempers the excitement surrounding his young star with a clear message for the future.
At just 17 years old, Lamine Yamal has made a powerful breakthrough into the FC Barcelona first team, quickly becoming one of Europe’s most exciting young prospects. With titles already won for both Spain and the Blaugrana, the young winger is far from satisfied and has made it clear he wants more. However, amid all the hype, new head coach Hansi Flick has chosen to send him a warning.
In a recently released documentary from Barça One, the Catalan attacker made no effort to hide his ambition: “I want to win everything now. I don’t think about how many years I have left; I want titles and to be the best.” His bold statements, full of confidence and drive, quickly caught the attention of the German manager.
Flick praises… but with a reminder
In an interview with the club’s official media, Hansi Flick didn’t hold back his admiration for Yamal’s natural talent, but also stressed the importance of hard work and daily commitment: “I always say it — he’s a genius. He’s 17, and so far, everything is going well. But if he wants to stay at the top level for the next 15 years, he has to train very hard and be mentally prepared.”
The former Bayern Munich coach, known for his disciplined approach and support for young players, made it clear that talent alone isn’t enough: “With his quality, he must work harder than anyone. It’s not just about enjoying the game — sacrifice is also essential.”

Flick also encouraged the young star to look up to teammates like Raphinha, highlighting his consistency and self-confidence: “He has good role models in the squad. Raphinha is one of them,” Flick added.
Despite his young age, Lamine Yamal already boasts impressive stats: 18 goals and 25 assists in 55 appearances with the first team this season. But beyond the numbers, it’s his maturity on the pitch that stands out. Still, his coach’s message is clear: to stay at the top, talent must be matched with full dedication.
The upcoming season will be key in proving whether the young Barcelona gem is truly ready to solidify himself as the superstar he promises to become.
