Frenkie de Jong Wants to Stay at Barcelona: Renewal in Progress
Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong has made it clear that he wants to continue at FC Barcelona, and both he and the club seem aligned to extend his contract. With one year left on his current deal, both sides are already working on a new agreement.
In an interview with Dutch outlet Voetbal International, De Jong was direct: “I want to stay, and the club wants that too. So usually, an agreement is reached. I hope it happens soon.” The 28-year-old midfielder, who joined the Catalan club in 2019 from Ajax, has never hidden his affection for the team and his desire to remain part of the project now led by Hansi Flick.
Despite being surrounded by speculation in recent years — mainly due to his high salary — the Dutch international seems to have moved past that phase. His performances this past season have convinced not only the coaching staff but also the sporting director Deco, who has already expressed the club’s desire to secure his renewal as soon as possible.
A Season of Recovery and Consolidation
While some analysts have called this De Jong’s best campaign in a Barça shirt, he himself is more critical. “It wasn’t my best season. Things are often exaggerated. I was sidelined for a while because of my ankle, but I had already been playing well before that,” he said.
After overcoming chronic issues in his right ankle — which forced him to stop playing in April 2024 — De Jong returned in great form and secured a key role under the new coach. His position as a holding midfielder just in front of the defense, alongside Pedri, proved to be very effective, bringing balance and clean ball distribution.
In a season where players like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Pedri received much of the spotlight for winning domestic titles and performing strongly in the Champions League, De Jong’s contribution was also crucial. His ability to win back possession, organize play, and control the tempo has been vital to Barcelona’s solid campaign.
Now, with his fitness recovered and his performance peaking, Frenkie de Jong’s contract renewal appears to be just a matter of time. The club does not want to lose one of its key pillars, and the player is more committed than ever to the Blaugrana project.
