Flick’s Surprising Message to Xavi Hernández About the Legacy He Left at Barcelona
Xavi Hernández acknowledged in ‘The Athletic’ that Hansi Flick thanked him for the legacy he left behind at Barcelona
Despite the disappointment of being eliminated in the Champions League semifinals, FC Barcelona fans are fully aware that this was the first experience of a project that promises to bring them much joy under Hansi Flick. However, recognition is also beginning to grow for the work done by Xavi Hernández in giving opportunities to players who are now among the best in the world.

Flick thanked Xavi for what he built in Barcelona
Today, no one denies that Lamine Yamal is a footballer who, sooner or later, will win a Ballon d'Or. Nor that Cubarsí is the most promising center-back project in Europe. Both were given their first opportunities under Xavi Hernández, who, in an interview with ‘The Athletic’, admitted that Flick thanked him for the legacy he built that helped shape the first year of his project in Barcelona.
“Hansi came to see me and we talked for two hours. We have a good relationship and he told me, ‘Thank you very much. What you helped create here makes me happy. The players train hard and some of their mentality was acquired from you,’” said Xavi Hernández. “If you ask me whether I’m happy and proud of having given debuts to Lamine and Pau Cubarsí, of course I am. Lamine is a genius. He’ll become the best.”
“I respect Hansi and his players”
Many fans probably thought that Xavi Hernández would be upset about the success Barcelona had this season, built on a foundation he created. However, the reality is very different. Above all, Xavi always wants what’s best for Barcelona. That’s why he answered Joan Laporta’s call when the club was in the worst financial and sporting crisis in its history.
“We’re happy that Barça is doing so well. A lot of people think I wouldn’t be happy about how the team is doing just because I’m no longer the coach. It’s the opposite. If you say something positive about the current coach, Flick, it’s seen as something negative for the former coach — me. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I have a good relationship with and respect for Hansi and his players. The same respect I had for Ronald Koeman, who was there before me.”
