Preseason continues this Saturday with a true clash of European giants. AC Milan and Manchester United meet in Wroclaw in a friendly that will serve as one of their final major tests before the start of the new season.

Both teams are going through different processes. United found stability following the arrival of Michael Carrick, while Milan are beginning a new era under Ruben Amorim, who will have an added personal element to this match as he faces the club he managed until January.

Beyond the result, this will be an important opportunity to test players, make tactical adjustments and take a closer look at several new signings.

The Portuguese coach is trying to implement his usual three-center-back system, an approach that requires intensity when pressing, speed when recovering the ball and plenty of coordination when the team loses possession.

Amorim will also be without some important players.

Rafael Leão and Christian Pulisic are sidelined through injury, leaving Milan without two of their most dangerous attacking players. Their absences could open the door for Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Yunus Musah to operate behind Gonçalo Ramos.

The Portuguese striker will once again be one of the players to watch. Milan want to give him more minutes to accelerate his adaptation, especially amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Santiago Giménez, who could leave on loan.

Carrick has also started integrating new arrivals such as Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, although he is still searching for the ideal balance in midfield.

Bruno Fernandes remains the team’s conductor, and much of United’s attacking threat will once again run through the Portuguese star.

The match will also provide another important opportunity to evaluate Bryan Mbeumo as the attacking reference, supported by players capable of making dangerous runs from deeper positions.

Carrick Recovers Players but Still Has Some Absences

United will not arrive at full strength either.

Mason Mount is ruled out with a foot injury, while Manuel Ugarte will also be unavailable.

The good news is the gradual return of Matthijs de Ligt, who has resumed training with the squad after spending eight months out following back surgery. However, he still needs to regain match fitness before returning to regular competition.

Carrick also previously managed the workloads of Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martínez and Kobbie Mainoo with this match specifically in mind, meaning he could have several important players back against Milan.

Mainoo could be particularly important, as he can provide greater control in midfield alongside Andrey Santos and give Bruno Fernandes more freedom to operate closer to the penalty area.

Two Giants at Different Stages

On paper, Manchester United arrive with greater stability.

Carrick’s team have produced encouraging performances throughout preseason and appear to have a much more defined structure. Milan, meanwhile, are still adapting to Amorim’s ideas, while the absences of Leão and Pulisic significantly reduce their attacking options.

But that is precisely what makes this matchup so interesting.

Milan need a performance that confirms their new project is beginning to take shape, while United want to close out their preparation by proving that the progress made under Carrick last season can continue.

And for Ruben Amorim, inevitably, this one will mean a little more.

Seven months after leaving Manchester United, the Portuguese coach will come face-to-face with his former club, now from the AC Milan bench, in one final major test before the matches that really count begin.
