Lionel Messi Was Surprised to Face Gudjohnsen’s Son, a Former Barcelona Player, in the Friendly Against Iceland.
The Argentine captain scored a goal and experienced a unique anecdote: he reunited with Daníel Gudjohnsen, son of his former Barcelona teammate.
Victory against Iceland and Messi's appearance
Lionel Messi was once again a key player in the last friendly match of the Argentine National Team against Iceland, before the start of the 2026 World Cup. The captain came on in the second half, played just over 20 minutes, and managed to score a goal, showcasing glimpses of his quality at the end of the preparation. However, the most striking thing happened after the final whistle.
The meeting between Messi and Daniel
As usual, several Icelandic players approached to greet him and exchange jerseys. Among them appeared a young forward who surprised the Argentine star with an unexpected phrase: "Do you remember who I am?" Messi, bewildered, listened to the explanation; it was Daníel Gudjohnsen, a 20-year-old forward, 1.90 meters tall, who currently plays for Malmö FF in Sweden.
The surprise was even greater when Daníel revealed his full identity as the son of Eidur Gudjohnsen, Messi's former teammate at Barcelona between 2006 and 2009. Eidur, remembered for his time at the Catalan club and for being the first Icelandic footballer to win the Champions League, shared a locker room with the Rosario native in the early years of the golden era of the Catalan team.

Messi's reaction
In the mixed zone, Messi recounted the moment with sincerity: "The truth is that it surprised me at that moment. Then he told me he was Gudjohnsen's son. I don't really remember, he was little. I remember seeing him with his father at some training sessions, but I didn't remember, he was very young."
