Lionel Messi Returns to Training With Argentina — Will He Play Against Puerto Rico?
After scoring a brace with Inter Miami and rejoining the Argentine national team, Lionel Messi sparks excitement over whether he’ll feature in the friendly against Puerto Rico, set to take place this Tuesday in Miami.
The Argentina National Team continues its U.S. tour and, after defeating Venezuela 1–0, now turns its focus to the second friendly of this FIFA window against Puerto Rico. The match will be held at Chase Stadium in Miami, with the main question being whether Lionel Messi will once again wear the Albiceleste shirt after skipping the previous game.
The Argentine captain sat out the clash with La Vinotinto to play for his club, Inter Miami, where he shined with a two-goal performance in MLS. However, on Sunday he returned to training under Lionel Scaloni, who is already finalizing his starting lineup for Tuesday’s fixture. Messi’s participation remains uncertain, but his return to camp has reignited excitement among fans and teammates alike.
Messi Balancing Rest and Readiness
The physical strain of playing two matches in four days could keep Messi on the bench, as the coaching staff aims to avoid unnecessary risks in a friendly. Still, the No. 10 trained normally and will be assessed up until matchday. “We’ll see how he feels. The most important thing is for him to stay healthy and continue building rhythm with the group,” a member of the technical staff reportedly said.

Meanwhile, Scaloni plans to test several new faces who didn’t feature against Venezuela. The manager has already confirmed that Lautaro Rivero and José Manuel López will start, eager to make the most of their opportunity with the Albiceleste.
A Friendly Full of Opportunity
With Franco Mastantuono and Enzo Fernández ruled out due to injuries, Scaloni must reshape his midfield. Players like Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel, and Nicolás Otamendi are expected to return to the starting XI, bringing leadership and balance against a theoretically weaker opponent.
Regardless of the opposition’s level, this match against Puerto Rico offers Scaloni a valuable chance to experiment and refine his squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and the 2026 tournament. And even if his minutes are limited, every move from Messi in training keeps the excitement alive — because whenever the Argentine legend steps on the pitch, it’s always a celebration.
