Canada 1-1 Republic of Ireland: Marsch's side pegged back in final warm-up friendly
Canada had plenty of chances against the Republic of Ireland, but struggled to convert them, being held to a draw ahead of the World Cup.
Canada were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland in their final warm-up friendly ahead of the World Cup.
Jake O'Brien's own goal had given Canada a first-half lead, but Chiedozie Ogbene turned in the rebound of Troy Parrott's saved penalty to salvage a draw.
Canada started brightly, with Tajon Buchanan seeing an early effort saved before they dominated possession.
Their early pressure was then rewarded in the 23rd minute as O'Brien inadvertently turned in Stephen Eustaquio's corner in a crowded box.
Canada could not build on that advantage despite a host of half-chances on either side of the break before Cyle Larin caught Jamie McGrath with a high boot just inside the box to give away a penalty.
Maxime Crepeau then made a big save to keep out Parrott's spot-kick, and it was Ogbene who reacted quickest to reach the rebound and turn it into the back of the net.
The hosts continued to push for a winner but could not find a way past Mark Travers as they were held to a frustrating result ahead of their World Cup opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 12.
Haiti were also frustrated in their final match before the start of the tournament as they conceded two late goals in a 2-1 defeat to Peru.
Wilson Isidor had given Haiti an early lead, but Renzo Garces and Jairo Velez scored in the 81st and 84th minutes, respectively, to condemn them to defeat.
Will wastefulness haunt Canada at the World Cup?
Neither Canada nor Haiti would have wanted to sign off for the World Cup without a win, but Jesse Marsch's side will particularly feel they could have got something more against Ireland.
The hosts racked up 20 chances in the match, having 12 of those shots from inside the box, but only two of them hit the target, and they accumulated just 1.1 expected goals (xG).
Ireland, by contrast, had just five attempts, with three shots on target, though their 1.56 xG was largely inflated by the penalty.
Liam Millar led the charge for Canada with five shots, while Ismael Kone, Larin and Jonathan David all had three shots apiece with no luck as their only goal came via an unfortunate O'Brien.
Canada are unbeaten in each of their last six matches against European opposition (W3 D3), since a 4-0 defeat to Netherlands in June 2024, which bodes well for their opening match next week.
