Zidane returns to coaching with France

Zinedine Zidane has officially returned to the sidelines after being introduced as the new head coach of the French national team. The former Real Madrid manager signed a four-year contract that will keep him in charge through the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at his unveiling, Zidane admitted that coaching France had been his only objective since leaving Real Madrid. He revealed that he rejected several club offers over the past few years because leading his country's national team was the challenge he had always been waiting for.

French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo disclosed that initial discussions with Zidane began in February 2025 as part of a long-term succession plan following Didier Deschamps' successful 14-year tenure. Diallo praised Deschamps for restoring France among the world's elite before handing over the reins to another national legend.

Zidane confirmed he will bring much of the coaching staff that worked alongside him during his successful spell at Real Madrid. His complete technical team will be officially presented in September ahead of France's UEFA Nations League opener against Turkey.

The 1998 World Cup winner also offered a glimpse into his football philosophy, suggesting fans can expect an attacking style shaped by his 25 years in Spanish football. While he declined to discuss a potential future clash with Spain, he stressed that his immediate focus is preparing for his first match in charge.

Regarding captain Kylian Mbappé, Zidane explained that he has not yet spoken with the forward, preferring to allow him to enjoy his offseason before assembling the squad.

With enormous expectations and the full support of the French federation, Zidane begins a new chapter aiming to keep France among the world's strongest football nations and compete for every major international title.
