Zidane Closer Than Ever to Coaching France After Deschamps' Departure Following the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The French Federation will announce its new coach on July 28, and all signs point to Zinedine Zidane, who is set to start a new era with Les Bleus.
The end of the Deschamps era
Didier Deschamps ended a 14-year cycle at the helm of the French national team. World Champion in 2018, finalist in Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup, as well as semifinalist in Euro 2024 and this summer's World Cup, his legacy is imposing. With 185 matches managed and 120 victories, he became one of the most successful coaches in the recent history of the Blues. The defeat against Spain in the semifinals and the 6-4 loss to England in the third-place match marked the end of his tenure.
Zidane, the natural candidate
The French Football Federation will announce the new coach on July 28, and according to the French press, all signs point to Zinedine Zidane. The former Real Madrid star hasn't managed since 2021, but his resume speaks for itself, two LaLiga titles and three consecutive Champions League titles. His ability to manage star-studded locker rooms and his tactical vision make him the ideal candidate to take the reins of a team looking to renew its energy without losing competitiveness.
What's coming for France
The schedule doesn't give any respite; in September and October, France will face Turkey, Italy, and Belgium twice in the Nations League. Zidane, if confirmed, will have to quickly stamp his mark on a team that is already considered one of the most powerful on the planet. The question is whether he will maintain the tactical line inherited from Deschamps or if he will opt for his own model, more offensive and risky, that combines his style with the discipline that characterized the previous cycle. July 28 will be a key date to define the immediate future of the Blues.
