With His First World Cup Goal, Lamine Yamal Broke a Record
A Historic Goal For Spain
It only took Lamine Yamal 11 minutes to write a new page in the history of the FIFA World Cup. The young Spanish attacker scored his first goal at a World Cup and, at just 18 years and 343 days old, became the youngest player from Spain to score in the biggest international competition.
The goal came at an important moment for La Roja, who needed a convincing performance after the doubts created by their previous match. Yamal showed the personality that has defined him since reaching the highest level.
With this goal, the Spain forward surpassed the record previously held by Gavi, who scored at 18 years old during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. But Yamal’s achievement goes far beyond his national team’s records, as he immediately entered a historic list in the World Cup.
Yamal Matches a Record Held by Pelé
The Spanish player became the eighth-youngest goalscorer to find the net at a World Cup and also matched a record belonging to one of football’s greatest legends: Pelé.
“O Rei” scored his first World Cup goal at just 18 years and 138 days old during the 1958 Sweden World Cup, a tournament where he would eventually become champion with Brazil. Yamal remains behind the Brazilian legend in that ranking, but being part of a list that includes Pelé already represents an achievement reserved for very few players.
Spain appears to have found its best form again. After a difficult match against Cape Verde, the team responded against Saudi Arabia and showed a much more dominant side, with Mikel Oyarzabal in excellent form and a much smoother attack.
The victory not only provides confidence, but also puts Spain one step closer to the next round and confirms that the early setback may have only been a temporary obstacle.
With Yamal breaking records and the team regaining its confidence, La Roja once again looks like one of the teams to watch in this World Cup.
