Will Neymar start for Brazil against Japan? Carlo Ancelotti addresses the question
The biggest question surrounding Brazil ahead of its Round of 32 clash against Japan at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is whether Neymar will return to the starting lineup.
The biggest question surrounding Brazil ahead of its Round of 32 clash against Japan at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is whether Neymar will return to the starting lineup.
After missing Brazil's first two group-stage matches with a muscle injury and making his tournament debut off the bench against Scotland, the Santos star could play a bigger role. However, head coach Carlo Ancelotti stopped short of confirming a starting spot.
Ancelotti provides an update on Neymar
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Brazilian coach praised Neymar's recovery while explaining that his role will depend on how the game unfolds.
"Neymar is progressing very well. Over the last week he has improved a lot. It's unfortunate that he couldn't train with us throughout the entire camp. He's doing quite well. His role in the match will depend a lot on the context of the game and on his progress."
Those comments leave open the possibility that Neymar could either start or once again come off the bench.

Neymar's road back
Neymar suffered a muscle injury shortly before the World Cup, forcing him to miss Brazil's group-stage matches against Morocco and Haiti.
He returned against Scotland as a substitute, making his first appearance of the tournament and taking another important step in his recovery.
Now Brazil hopes its biggest star can take on a larger role as the knockout stage begins.
