Why Lionel Messi Was Absent From Argentina's World Cup Homecoming Parade

Argentina Returned Home Without Its Captain
Thousands of Argentina supporters lined the streets of Buenos Aires to welcome the national team home after its defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
However, one familiar face was missing from the celebrations. Lionel Messi chose not to return to Argentina with the rest of the squad, taking a different route after the tournament came to an end.
Why Didn't Messi Join the Parade?
Instead of flying back with the delegation, the Argentina captain traveled directly to Miami before planning a short break in his hometown of Rosario.
As a result, Messi was not part of the group led by head coach Lionel Scaloni and 16 players who landed at Ezeiza International Airport before boarding an open-top bus to the Argentine Football Association's training complex, where thousands of fans gathered to greet the team.
The squad received a warm welcome that included a red carpet, a military band, fireworks and live music despite falling just one victory short of defending its World Cup crown.
Argentina Held a Homecoming Despite the Defeat
Argentine president Javier Milei explained that the players were not in the mood to celebrate after losing the World Cup final, but believed the team still deserved recognition for another remarkable tournament.
"They decided not to celebrate because of the disappointment of not winning, but someone had to do something worthy of this wonderful team," Milei said.
The president also praised the squad for reaching another World Cup final and for the commitment it displayed throughout the tournament.
Milei Asked Fans to Respect Messi's Decision
Milei also defended Messi's absence and urged supporters to understand the emotional impact of the defeat.
"We're human beings and we make decisions based on how we feel. This isn't a moment that feels good," he said.
The Argentine president added that football fans owe Messi enormous gratitude for everything he has accomplished with the national team and asked the public to respect the captain's decision to step away from the homecoming.
Is This the End of Messi's International Career?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup had long been viewed as Messi's likely farewell to football's biggest stage. The Inter Miami star played in his sixth World Cup at 39 years old and once again led Argentina all the way to the final.
However, Messi has not officially announced his retirement from international football.
As Lionel Scaloni begins preparing the next generation of Argentine talent, the future of the team's greatest player remains one of the biggest questions left after the 2026 World Cup.
