Who is Sidny Lopes Cabral, Cape Verde’s breakout star at the 2026 World Cup?
The goal by the Cape Verdean gave the tournament's Cinderella team hope of eliminating the world champions, Argentina.
Sidny Lopes Cabral became a global talking point after his stunning goal against Argentina—the 103rd-minute equalizer to make it 2-2 in extra time—which saw Cape Verde stun the reigning world champions in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Is it the best goal of the tournament so far?
THE MEMORABLE PLAY
The 23-year-old Cape Verdean forward received the ball on the left wing with his back to goal, before cutting inside past Alexis Mac Allister. From the edge of the box, he unleashed a right-footed strike that flew past Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez and curled into the far top corner at the keeper’s left side.
The goal briefly sparked dreams of a historic upset for the “Blue Sharks” against Argentina, although La Albiceleste ultimately prevailed 3-2 in a dramatic encounter.
Cabral also came close again in the 116th minute, forcing Martínez into a difficult one-handed save from a free kick, nearly sending the match to penalties.
THE ICONIC CELEBRATION
The young star celebrated in style, running toward the stands at the Miami Dolphins stadium, where he shared the moment with Cape Verdean fans before embracing a woman reported to be his partner.
THE PLAYER
Cabral is a modern, versatile footballer capable of playing as a right-back or winger. Developed in European football, he represents a new generation of hybrid players shaped by both European tactical discipline and African creativity.
Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Cape Verdean heritage, he has emerged as one of the standout figures of a Cape Verde side considered the surprise package of the 2026 World Cup, having previously eliminated Cameroon in African qualifying.
His game is defined by pace in transition, intelligent wide play, and a constant willingness to join the attack without neglecting defensive duties. At the 2026 World Cup, he has risen to global prominence thanks not only to his performances, but also his ability to deliver in decisive moments.
THE ROAD TO THE TOP
Currently a Trabzonspor player in Turkey’s Süper Lig, Cabral was previously developed at Benfica, who signed him on December 30, 2025, after his breakout spell at Estrela da Amadora.
He signed a long-term deal until 2030 in a transfer worth $6.8 million, before being loaned out to Turkey.
His journey to the top was far from straightforward. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he found himself without a club after spells at FC Twente in the Netherlands and Helsingborg in Sweden. That setback forced him into Germany’s fourth tier with FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in 2022, before moving to Viktoria Köln in the third division, where he rebuilt his reputation as a rising talent.
