Who Are England's Five Key Absences Against Spain?

  • The Three Lions, the 2026 World Cup third-place finishers, will face reigning world champions Spain during this international break. Here are all the details.

England will begin their 2026-27 Nations League campaign with several key absences. The national team, coached by Thomas Tuchel, has confirmed five injury-related withdrawals ahead of the highly anticipated clash with world champions Spain at Wembley.

FIVE ABSENCES FOR THE CLASH WITH SPAIN

The English Football Association confirmed that Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo will miss the upcoming international fixtures. All five players have been ruled out due to different injury problems.

Palmer's absence is particularly notable. The Chelsea midfielder had returned to Tuchel's plans after missing the World Cup and was enjoying a strong start to the season, with four goals and two assists in seven games.

Rice, one of England's key midfielders, is also unavailable, along with Rashford, Mainoo and Livramento.

TUCHEL LOOKS FOR SOLUTIONS AGAINST THE WORLD CHAMPIONS

With those absences, Thomas Tuchel has called up James Garner of Everton and Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest as replacements. Both players are expected to join the England squad on Tuesday.

The match against Spain will be England's first fixture of this Nations League campaign and will be played on Saturday, September 26, at Wembley.

The Three Lions will then face the Czech Republic and Croatia as part of a schedule featuring four matches during this international window.

For Tuchel, the challenge will be to adjust his team without five players originally included in his plans. On the other side, Spain will arrive as the reigning world champions and will also have changes to its squad following its 2026 World Cup triumph.
