United States Falls Short on Home Soil With Heavy Round of 16 Defeat
The United States was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a crushing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16. The Red Devils delivered their best performance of the tournament and will now face Spain for a place in the semifinals.
The dream of hosting a successful 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a disappointing end for the United States. Mauricio Pochettino's side was thoroughly outplayed by Belgium, which cruised to a dominant 4-1 victory in the Round of 16 to expose the shortcomings of the tournament hosts.
After advancing with confidence through the previous round, the United States never truly settled into the match. From the opening minutes, Belgium controlled possession, dictated the tempo, and capitalized on nearly every mistake to secure a convincing victory that was never seriously in doubt.
Belgium Took Control From the Opening Whistle
The European side struck early as Charles De Ketelaere opened the scoring before the 10-minute mark. Although the United States responded with an equalizer through Malik Tillman, the momentum shift proved to be short-lived.

Just two minutes later, De Ketelaere restored Belgium's lead, and the Red Devils continued to create dangerous opportunities behind the creativity of Leandro Trossard and the commanding midfield display of Hans Vanaken.
The hosts' situation worsened early in the second half when goalkeeper Matt Freese committed a costly mistake that gifted Hans Vanaken Belgium's third goal, effectively putting the match out of reach.
To make matters worse, Christian Pulisic was forced off with an injury, leaving the Americans without their biggest attacking threat during the most critical stage of the contest.
Lukaku Finishes the Job as Belgium Eyes Spain
Deep into stoppage time, Romelu Lukaku added the fourth goal to complete the rout, extending his remarkable scoring record with Belgium and dedicating the goal to injured teammate Amadou Onana, who had been forced off earlier in the match.
While Rudi Garcia celebrated his team's finest display of the tournament, Mauricio Pochettino endured one of the toughest nights of his tenure. His tactical adjustments failed to change the course of the match as the United States exited its home World Cup with a performance that fell well below expectations.
With the emphatic victory, Belgium advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Spain in one of the tournament's marquee matchups. For the United States, meanwhile, the campaign ends in bitter disappointment after a heavy defeat on home soil in the biggest match of its World Cup.
