Tunisia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Roster, Key Players, and Everything You Need To Know
The Carthage Eagles will play in their third consecutive FIFA World Cup, although they are still searching for the historic breakthrough that would firmly establish them among Africa’s elite football nations. Tunisia has built a competitive and consistent national team in recent years, but it still needs to turn solid performances into a truly memorable World Cup campaign.
After several World Cups in which they showed promise without making a deep run, the current generation arrives determined to break that barrier and prove it can compete toe-to-toe with major national teams on football’s biggest stage.
Road to the World Cup
something historic on the road to the World Cup: the team did not concede a single goal throughout the entire qualification process.
The Carthage Eagles scored 22 goals, won nine matches, and drew one, producing one of the most impressive defensive campaigns ever seen in African World Cup qualifiers.
Beyond the numbers, the squad displayed tactical discipline, defensive solidity, and impressive maturity, once again proving why it remains one of the continent’s most respected national teams.

World Cup History
Tunisia made its FIFA World Cup debut at Argentina 1978, a historic tournament for the nation. There, Tunisia earned the first-ever African victory in World Cup history, defeating Mexico 3-1 at the Gigante de Arroyito with goals from Ali Kaabi, Nejib Ghommidh, and Mokhtar Dhouieb.
The celebrations continued with a remarkable draw against West Germany, the reigning world champion at the time, creating a historic moment for African football.
After that appearance, Tunisia had to wait twenty years before returning to the World Cup. The team came back at France 1998, but failed to secure a victory, something that also happened at Korea/Japan 2002 and Germany 2006.
Tunisia returned to the World Cup at Russia 2018 after missing two consecutive editions. Although the team lost to England and Belgium, it managed to defeat Panama and record another World Cup victory.
However, the greatest moment in the country’s recent football history came at Qatar 2022. In the final group-stage match, Tunisia defeated France 1-0 thanks to a goal from Wahbi Khazri.
Tunisia needed a win and a loss by Australia to qualify for the Round of 16. Although the Australians advanced, that victory at Education City Stadium became an unforgettable moment in Tunisian football history.
Squad
Player To Watch
Without question, captain Ellyes Skhiri, midfielder for Eintracht Frankfurt, is the most important player of this generation.
From midfield, he controls the tempo of the game, provides defensive balance, and acts as the first outlet in attack. His tactical intelligence and ball-recovery ability are crucial to Tunisia’s system.
In addition, Skhiri possesses a powerful long-range shot, a weapon that could become extremely valuable for a team that already demonstrated offensive potential during the qualifiers.

Team Strengths
Strength
Tunisia’s biggest strength is its defense. Finishing the entire qualifying campaign without conceding a goal perfectly reflects the squad’s tactical organization.
The Carthage Eagles are a highly disciplined, compact team that is extremely difficult to break down defensively. The midfield also contributes balance and physical intensity.
Another key factor is the experience accumulated in international tournaments. Many players already competed in the 2022 World Cup and arrive with greater maturity.
Weakness
The team’s main weakness appears in attack when facing opponents willing to sit back and surrender possession.
Although Tunisia can be dangerous on the counterattack, the team sometimes struggles to consistently create chances and maintain sustained offensive pressure.
There is also a certain lack of squad depth compared to some of the tournament’s stronger national teams.
Style of Play
Tunisia relies on an organized and physical style of football. Its priority is usually maintaining defensive balance and closing spaces in midfield before attacking.
The team performs very well without possession and takes advantage of quick transitions to hurt opponents. It also relies heavily on physical play and set pieces.
Tunisia rarely dominates possession, but it knows how to frustrate stronger opponents and turn matches into tight, physically demanding contests.
Tournament Objective
With this generation maintaining the positive momentum from the last World Cup and adding young players who have started to shine in the AFCON, head coach Sabri Lamouchi has a clear objective: finally advance beyond the group stage.
Tunisia came very close to achieving that goal at Qatar 2022, and now hopes to turn that experience into the final push toward making history.
The group will not be easy, especially with the presence of the Netherlands, but after defeating France at the previous World Cup, there is a genuine belief within the squad that anything is possible.
