Total Failure for Brazil: The Seleção Crashes Out of the World Cup Against a Giant Norway
Brazil suffered one of the toughest blows in its recent history. The Seleção was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing 2-1 to Norway in the Round of 16, on a night that will be remembered as a complete failure for Brazilian soccer.
The defeat not only means an early goodbye for one of the biggest title favorites, but also a historic setback. Brazil had not been eliminated in the Round of 16 of a World Cup since Italy 1990, when it fell to Argentina. Since then, the Brazilian national team had always advanced beyond this stage, but in New Jersey, everything collapsed.
Ancelotti’s Project Did Not Work
The arrival of Carlo Ancelotti on the Brazilian bench had created huge expectations. The Italian coach was seen as the man capable of bringing order, hierarchy, and a winning mentality back to a generation full of talent. However, the project ended with an early elimination and too many doubts.
Brazil never managed to feel comfortable against Norway. It had dangerous moments, missed a first-half penalty through Bruno Guimarães, and found individual answers from Vinícius Jr., Endrick, and Neymar, but it never showed a clear collective idea. The Seleção relied more on individual sparks than on a real structure.
Neymar’s goal in stoppage time only served to add a bit of dignity to a painful elimination. For a national team built with the obligation of fighting for the title, going out in the Round of 16 represents a total failure.
Haaland, the Monster Who Destroyed Brazil
On the other side, Erling Haaland once again showed why he is one of the most decisive players in the world. The Norway striker appeared when the match demanded it most and delivered a brutal brace.
First, with a lethal header to open the scoring in the 78th minute. Then, with a stunning long-range goal in the 89th minute that finished off Brazil. It was a monstrous performance, the kind that changes a country’s history at a World Cup.
With his two goals, Haaland reached seven goals in the tournament and tied Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé at the top of the scoring chart. The Android not only eliminated Brazil, he also confirmed that he is having a legendary World Cup.
Norway keeps its historic streak against the Seleção alive and once again showed that it has Brazil’s number. For Brazil, meanwhile, this elimination will force a deep sporting review.
