Thousands welcome Egypt's national team home as heroes as Mohamed Salah makes a promise

Egypt's national team received a heroes' welcome on Friday after returning home from the FIFA World Cup 2026, despite being eliminated in the Round of 16.
Thousands of supporters gathered under the scorching sun to celebrate the Pharaohs, who made history by reaching the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Their tournament ended in heartbreaking fashion after surrendering a two-goal lead in a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Lionel Messi's Argentina, one of the competition's most memorable matches.
Thousands gathered to welcome the Pharaohs
The Egyptian squad landed in New Alamein at around 11:30 a.m. local time, where thousands of fans waving Egyptian flags were waiting outside the airport.
Players and coaching staff later traveled through the city aboard an open-top bus while supporters lined the streets to celebrate the team's historic achievement.

Mohamed Salah's promise
Following Egypt's elimination, captain Mohamed Salah shared an emotional message with supporters.
While acknowledging the disappointment of losing to Argentina, the Liverpool star vowed to help build a brighter future for Egyptian football.
"I know many of you are still upset, but I promise I will do everything in my power to make this the beginning of a new era for Egyptian football on the international stage."
Salah's message highlighted his commitment to leading Egypt beyond its historic World Cup run.
Pride despite the disappointment
Although the defeat ended Egypt's dream of advancing further, the atmosphere at the team's homecoming was one of pride rather than frustration.
New Alamein was chosen for the celebration because Egypt's government and presidency traditionally relocate there during the summer months.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is expected to meet the national team following its return.
Despite the painful elimination, Egypt returned home having united the country and inspired its supporters, with Salah promising that this World Cup will be the foundation for even greater achievements.
