The Unexpected Reason Why Gennaro Gattuso Rejected San Siro and Bets on Bergamo for the World Cup Playoff
Italy is fighting for a place at the 2026 World Cup against Northern Ireland, but Gennaro Gattuso made a surprising decision: avoiding San Siro and choosing Bergamo instead. The Italian coach revealed the reason behind the risky choice.
Italy once again fighting for its World Cup destiny
The Italy national team is once again under enormous pressure. After missing the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the historic Azzurri cannot afford another failure that would leave them out of football’s biggest stage.
That is why the upcoming clash against Northern Ireland in the UEFA playoff semifinal for the 2026 World Cup has already taken on the weight of a final. If Italy manages to get past this match, they will then face the winner of Wales vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina in a decisive game for a ticket to the tournament.
However, before the ball even rolls, one decision from head coach Gennaro Gattuso has already sparked major debate across the country: the match will not be played at San Siro, Italy’s most iconic stadium, but instead in Bergamo, at the home of Atalanta.
The surprising reason why Gattuso avoided San Siro
The choice of venue was far from accidental. In fact, Gattuso confirmed that he personally made the decision, with the backing of the Italian Football Federation.
The coach explained in a press conference that the atmosphere at San Siro could actually turn against his own players.
“I chose the stadium and the federation supported me. At San Siro there are Inter and Milan fans, and if you make a bad pass they start booing you,” the manager admitted.
For the former midfielder, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, playing in such a large stadium can become a disadvantage when the team struggles early in the match. Because of that, the coach preferred a more compact venue where the pressure could transform into constant support.
Bergamo, the good-luck charm Gattuso wants again
Beyond the stadium size, Bergamo holds a special meaning for Gattuso. As the coach explained, it was there where he managed his first match as Italy’s national team coach and received a very positive reaction from the fans.
Gattuso recalled that even during difficult moments in the game, the crowd continued to support the team.
According to comments reported by Italian media, the coach wanted a stadium that felt like a “pressure cooker”, where the closeness of the fans creates an intense but supportive environment for the national team.
The New Balance Arena, with a capacity of around 25,000 spectators, offers exactly the type of atmosphere Gattuso believes is ideal for such a high-stakes match.

Italy tries to break its playoff curse
The context surrounding the match explains why every decision is being scrutinized. Italy carries a painful recent history in World Cup playoffs.
In 2018, the Azzurri were eliminated by Sweden, missing the World Cup in Russia. Four years later, in 2022, they suffered another historic blow when they lost to North Macedonia, which kept them out of Qatar.
Now, under Gattuso, the goal is to finally break that negative cycle. With Bergamo as the stage and an entire nation watching, Italy will try to take the first step toward returning to the World Cup after almost a decade away.
