The Two Favorite Referees for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final
The semifinal between Argentina and England revives a historic rivalry, while FIFA decides on the referee for the grand final of the 2026 World Cup.
The wait for the second finalist
Tonight, Spain's opponent in the grand final next Sunday will be revealed. The expectation revolves not only around the sports result but also around the referee's appointment, which will be officially announced between Thursday and Friday. FIFA is evaluating names with experience and a proven track record to ensure impartiality in a match that will mark the end of the tournament.
Marciniak, the European candidate
The Polish Szymon Marciniak emerges as the main option if the final pits Spain against England. His resume backs him up as he was the referee for the Qatar 2022 final between Argentina and France, and although in this 2026 World Cup he only officiated two group stage matches, Argentina–Algeria (3-0) and Egypt–Iran (1-1), his maturity and experience place him at the top of the preferences. Other UEFA referees such as Glenn Nyberg (Sweden), Maurizio Mariani (Italy), Slavko Vincic (Slovenia), Espen Eskas (Norway), and Joao Pinheiro (Portugal) are on the list, but none with the same international career.

Sampaio, the South American card
In case the final is Spain–Argentina, the Brazilian Wilton Sampaio is favored. At 44 years old and with over 600 matches in his career, he has three World Cups (Russia, Qatar, and now 2026) and three Copa América titles (2019, 2021, 2024) to his name. In this edition, he officiated three matches, including the Netherlands–Morocco in the Round of 16, decided by penalties. His international experience and knowledge of South American football make him a solid alternative for a showdown with the Albiceleste on stage.
