The Preliminary List of Mexico to Face the World Cup
The Mexican National Team unveiled its preliminary 55-man roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring several surprises, notable absences, and fierce competition for the final spots in Javier Aguirre’s squad.
The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially underway, and the Mexican National Team took a major step forward by revealing the 55 players from which the final 26-man roster will be selected. Head coach Javier Aguirre already appears to have a core group in mind, although several positions remain uncertain heading into the tournament.
The biggest storyline from the preliminary call-up was the absence of Hirving Lozano, who was left out due to disciplinary reasons and a lack of playing time with San Diego FC. Rodrigo Huescas was also excluded as he continues recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee.
From this extended roster, the coaching staff will have until June 1 to submit the final squad to FIFA, leaving room for potential last-minute changes.
Aguirre Balances Experience and Youth
The preliminary list reflects a mix of veteran players and young talent looking to break into Mexico’s World Cup plans. In goal, legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa headlines the group alongside Raúl Rangel, Carlos Acevedo, Alex Padilla, José Antonio Rodríguez, and Carlos Moreno.
Defensively, Mexico maintains an experienced backbone led by Johan Vásquez, César Montes, Israel Reyes, Jesús Gallardo, and Jorge Sánchez, while younger names like Mateo Chávez and Ramón Juárez hope to secure a place in the final roster.
Midfield appears to be one of the most competitive areas of the squad. Players such as Edson Álvarez, Luis Chávez, Orbelín Pineda, Carlos Rodríguez, and Marcel Ruiz are expected to battle for starting roles, while rising talents like Gilberto Mora, Elías Montiel, and Brian Gutiérrez continue to push for opportunities.
Mexico’s Attack Raises Expectations Ahead of the World Cup
Up front, Mexico features several attackers arriving in strong form both in Europe and Liga MX. Santiago Gimenez, currently playing for AC Milan, is expected to become one of the offensive leaders of El Tri, alongside Raúl Jiménez, Julián Quiñones, César “Chino” Huerta, and Alexis Vega.
The roster also includes naturalized players such as Álvaro Fidalgo, Julián Quiñones, and Germán Berterame, as well as Mexican-American talents like Obed Vargas and Richard Ledezma, who could provide additional versatility to the squad.
Although much of the roster appears settled, several spots remain open and could depend on late-season performances, injuries, or tactical decisions from Javier Aguirre. With Mexico set to co-host the World Cup in 2026, expectations and pressure surrounding El Tri continue to grow.
